December 21, 2012 – The END… or is it?

May 21, 2011.  Remember that date?  There were billboards around the country stating this was the rapture – the beginning of the end.  This group of people supposedly searched the Bible and knew the date Jesus was coming back and they were calling for repentance and to be ready.  I certainly didn’t believe any of it… yet as the day approached… I mean, what if they were right?  It certainly doesn’t hurt to make sure you are right with God.  So I did.  I made sure I was right with God, because, maybe.  Well… the day came and went.  Oops.

Then October 21, 2011.  That same group says, no, we did not make a mistake, we just misunderstood a bit and it was a spiritual rapture to get us ready for the TRUE end of the world on October 21, 2011.  Needless to say, this date came and went without a blip.  This group had proven itself to be wrong, again and again, and if I am correct, this was not the first or second time this group announced the end of the world and was wrong.

Now December 21, 2012.  This the BIG one.  The Mayans predicted the end of time, Nostradamus did as well… and a host of others.  They even made a huge blockbuster movie called 2012.  It included massive metal arks at the end of the movie full of animals and people and anything else needed to restart civilization.  Although, doesn’t the Bible say that God promised to never destroy the world with a flood again?  That’s neither here nor there… the point is… it is coming and are you ready!

Even IF nothing happens… it is always a good thing to re-evaluate your life.  It certainly NEVER hurts to re-read and pray through Psalm 139, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.  See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”  Ultimately it is between you and God.  The world may or may not end on December 21, 2012 (I hope not, we have our company Christmas Party and White Elephant Gift Exchange), but we do know that we will die someday and we don’t know when that will be.  To keep ourselves pure before God, holy, if you will, is of utmost importance.

I currently live overseas and books in English are a commodity.  (Thank goodness for eReaders!) I recently came across The Hitch Hikers Ultimate Guide (Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy plus four others).  I’d heard about it, never read it before, AND knew NOTHING about it.  So, I thought I’d give it a try.  Oddly enough the first chapter ends with Earth being destroyed for a super highway through the galaxy.  Interesting.  Additionally, I spend time each day with the goal of reading the Bible through in a year. The portions I’m reading currently are the prophets and Revelations.  It would appear, that everything I’m reading has to do with the end of the world, Armageddon, etc.  I’m not sure if this is pure and total random coincidence or weird ironic bizarre cosmic humor?  That being said, I do believe God has a sense of humor.

Regardless, my point is, whatever you believe about December 21, 2012, or any other day, for that matter, the Bible clearly states we do not know when Christ will return.  He could return any day.  So, you must always be prepared to meet your maker.  A reminder of the two greatest commandments – Love God.  Love others.
